Princes Highway crash claims man’s life in east Gippsland

A man is dead and a woman is fighting for life after a head-on collision between a car and a cattle truck in east Gippsland.

Emergency services were called to the crash on the Princes Highway near Lochiel Street in Orbost about 5.15pm.

The male driver of the car, aged in his 20s, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

His female passenger, also in her 20s, has been flown to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition with head, chest and leg injuries.

The driver of the truck was not injured and is assisting police with their enquiries.

Police have blocked the Princes Highway near Orbost.

The provisional road toll is 229 for the year, compared to 212 for the same time last year.
