Pair bag bronze medals

TWO Warrnambool BMX Club riders on opposite ends of their careers have collected state bronze plates.

Karla Jephcott and Amber Dowd celebrated podium finishes at the Victorian titles in Melbourne on the weekend in their respective classes.

Jephcott, 33, defied a short recovery time from a broken hand to finish third in the 30-plus women’s cruiser class and the 20-inch wheel section.

Amber, 10, collected her bronze in the 10-year-old girls’ 20-inch wheel category.

They were among 16 Warrnambool riders to tackle the state championships — 13 came home with plates, given out to those who make the eight-person finals.

Jephcott said she was thrilled to back up her 2013 third-place finish, particularly given her injury-riddled preparation.

She broke her right hand in a racing accident in September — her first major injury since taking the sport on two years ago.

She had three weeks to prepare for the competition.

“I was off the bike for 10 weeks so I was unprepared but my legs still knew what to do,” Jephcott said.

Jephcott said Amber, a pupil at Dennington’s St John’s Primary School, was a promising rider.

“Amber did very well, she rode strongly all weekend,” she said.
