SMILE SAYS IT ALL: Emma Klasen, of NSW, after victory in the girls’ 12 years 200 metres final at the Sport Australia track and field titles at Penguin.Picture: Stuart Wilson.JUST three years after taking up athletics, young New South Wales runner Emma Klasen will return home as a national champion.

Emma, of Tamworth, yesterday claimed the title in the 12-year-old girls’ 200-metre event at the School Sport Australia national track and field championships at Penguin.

Her time of 26.14 was just enough to outlast her rivals in the closest of finishes.

Catching her breath after the race, Emma said her most overwhelming feeling was tiredness.

“I’m pretty excited,” she said.

Emma said she began running when aged nine after being encouraged to do so by her older brother.

Queensland runner Adrian Armao claimed the 12-year-old boys’ title, breaking away from his competitors in the home straight to win in a time of 24.46.

Adrian, from the Gold Coast, said he was pleased with his performance, which was just reward for his dedication to training.

“I thought at the bend I was going to win,” he said.

Tasmanian athletes were up against it in the 200m races, with under-10 competitor Nina Galligan (Mount Nelson Primary) the only runner from the state to qualify for a final over that distance.

Para athletes also had their moment to shine yesterday, with T35 (celebral palsy) class athlete Tamsin Colley (NSW) one of the standout performers, running a winning time of 3:34.58 to win the 12 years girls’ para 800 metres.

Earlier, the championships began with a march of teams and the opening ceremony, which featured sporting talent from across the North-West.

The nationals continue this morning from 11.30am with the 100 metres heats, with semi-finals to be run in the afternoon.

Also on today’s program are the 800m heats, the para 200m and 4x100m relay events, along with a full program of field events, including long jump, high jump, shot put and discus.

The four-day national event runs until Monday.
