Mare scores maiden victory

A MAIDEN win for pacing mare Territorial has been a long time coming, but success finally arrived last night at Wivenhoe Showground.

Part-owner John Houston explained that the horse suffered a respiratory tract infection as a three-year-old and had since been working back to full health.

The lightly-raced five-year-old, with Gareth Rattray in the sulky, justified a $3.30 favourite quote to score by four-and-a-half metres in an action-packed affair in race 2.

Polemarker Billy Khan, who had previously won two races from 98 starts, led comfortably and looked the winner until the gelding galloped with a lap to go.

Several other horses were inconvenienced as a result, but Territorial managed to avoid the chaos.

“We just missed the skirmish and you don’t really expect to,” Houston said.

“It was a great drive on Gareth’s part.”

The Andrew Rawlings-trained Territorial, who had recorded two placings in recent times, was only having her 12th start.

Rattray made it three winners in a row next race, when he steered Nances Thrill ($3.80) home.

Nances Thrill was headed by favourite Shakes Gold, but settled in the handy one out, one back position before Rattray led her to the lead with half a lap to go.

Nances Thrill held off a fast-finishing Baragoola to win by half a metre and register her third win at start 17.

Owner John Brown paid tribute to the Melissa Maine-Gareth Rattray training-driving combo.

“They are a very good team,” he said.

“Gareth is an unreal driver and a terrific handler of horses.

“Their approach is why they get results.”

It was a sad end to last night’s program with a runner having to be euthanased prior to the start of race 5.

Fletch Davis, a five-year-old gelding, sustained injuries when he reared up and then appeared to hit the ground hard.

Chairman of stewards Adrian Crowther later confirmed the horse was treated on track but was then humanely euthanased on vet’s advice.
