Festival named best major event

THE event that made Tamworth famous, the Country Music Festival, was crowned the state’s top festival at a gala awards ceremony on Thursday night.

It won gold in the major events category at the NSW Tourism Awards in Darling Harbour.

In accepting the award, Tamworth Regional Council general manager Paul Bennett paid tribute to the entire community.

“This award belongs to the residents of Tamworth as much as it does to the organisers and stakeholders,” Mr Bennett said.

“The passion and commitment of our Tamworth ambassadors contributes each year to the success of the festival.”

After winning silver at the Inland Tourism Awards earlier in the year, the Nundle Woollen Mill took out the top gong in the heritage and cultural tourism category.

Moree Visitor Information Centre made it a memorable night for the region by claiming gold in the visitor information and services category.

Tamworth mayor Col Murray said the city was gearing up to welcome the vast festival crowds in January.

“The festival is on track to be another memorable and enjoyable experience, offering even more for festival fans,” Cr Murray said.

In April 2015, the Tamworth Country Music Festival is hoping to repeat history by taking out the nation’s highest accolade and being named Australia’s best major festival and event at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Adelaide.
