Beautide can join the greats

WITH an ideal preparation behind him, champion Tasmanian pacer Beautide stands on the brink of joining harness racing’s all-time greats in tonight’s Miracle Mile at Menangle.

Speaking on the Tasracing website, trainer-driver James Rattray said he couldn’t fault the defending champion’s lead-up to the 1609-metre race, which included a strong win in the $100,000 Coca-Cola sprint last week.

“He seems really sharp, and looks good in his condition,” Rattray said.

“The last month has been pretty good, and his last two runs were very good.

“(The Coca-Cola sprint win) was a great effort, because he did a fair bit of work and never saw the fence.

“(To win) in a 1min 50sec mile-rate, you don’t see that very often.”

A clear favourite for the $750,000 race, Beautide looks set to join the likes of modern-day greats Smoken Up, Be Good Johnny, Sokyola and Holmes DG as back-to-back winners of the famous race.

Starting from gate 3, Rattray was happy with the draw for Beautide and said the start of the race will dictate his tactics.

“It’s a good draw — ideally you want to be in the first four or five and not too wide over these sprint distances as it’s pretty hard to get inside it if they’re running 1min 50sec up front and make ground off them,” he said.

“There is a fair bit of gate speed inside me and Suave Stuey Lombo outside, so it will be interesting to see what happens early.

“There are a heap of different scenarios that could happen, but the first 200-300 metres will sort a few of them out.”

The Miracle Mile is race 8 on the 10-race card tonight at Menangle, and will be run at 9.40pm.
